Search William Hope. He was one of the
premiere spirit photographers of the early
Twentieth Century and was considered by
believers and supporters to be a true master
of the art of producing spirits on ordinary
photographic plates. To others, he was a
clever trickster and while he had more than
his share of detractors, he was often accused
of fraud but was never caught at it -- thanks
to the controversy that surrounded the main
attempt to expose him.

Good try to bring mystery out of
multi-exposures and/or superimpositions,
ha,ha,ha... Just the same it is a very
interesting photo.

This is one of my favorite shots. As
kattyshack pointed out, spirit photography
was really popular in the early Twentieth
Century. Well-off society people were often
eager to get their own ghost portraits, so
they sought out "spirit
photographers". Some advertised as real
spirit mediums and some were open in creating
spirit photography for entertainment
purposes. There are many spirit photos which
feature photos of the subjects themselves as
spirits haunting themselves!

the age and schlocky composition.

This dude was caught hoaxing - there's no
doubt.. But (as usual) it isn't quite as
straightforward as just that.
He usually had to get an image of the
spirit/dead person to superimpose. However a
few shots taken of people he didn't know, at
short notice, still seemed to show something
spooky!
(Cue thunderous organ music crescendo)

This is before people were exposed to what
can be done with photographs - double
exposures and other techniques. So ignorance
and fear mongering were rampant.
