This is great! The bridge looks so close to
this today, makes me miss living in Sydney.

Except the trains have been shunted off the
side because of how many cars there are.

I love exploring our history, I recently
assisted my daughter with a project on the
building of the Sydney Harb Bridge and whilst
I didn't have access at the time to this site
I had the pleasure of locating various
photo's which I saved and reprinted via a USB
and a Store, my daughter intends keeping her
"A" mark for this assignment, the
pics make it so realistic as though you were
there taking pics

Its interesting that there appears to be
train lines on both sides of the bridge where
these days the line is only one side.

Great stuff State Library. There were trains
on that side (as they still are today) and I
think trams ran on the opposite side where
cars now drive.

Yes, trams not trains. They left with the
rest of the tram system. The original concept
was trains to the north eastern suburbs but
that never happened.

To Frontdrive34: I meant the line that is on
the far right of the image that looks like a
train line but Acanthistius says is a tram
line.

The picture is fantastic. Did anyone else
notice that the vehicle traffic doesn't seem
to have any particular direction? 1st two
cars and bicycle are heading away from us,
then one car heading towards us then another
away. Did they have traffic control lanes
back then?

Not sure what you are seeing momontai. A
truck and car and two cyclists are heading
north bound and on the other side a car and
truck are south bound just as we drive it in
2008.

Too much empty space from a street, crop off
half off it, also crop a bit on right hand
and left hand side.

Thank you for posting this on flickr. I
wonder how much was the toll charge back then
:)

Originally it cost a car or motorcycle six
pence(= 5 cents) to cross, a horse and rider
being three pence. Use of the bridge by
bicycle riders (provided that they use the
cycleway) and by pedestrians is free. Later
governments capped the fee for motorcycles at
one-quarter of the passenger-vehicle cost,
but now it is again the same as the cost for
a passenger vehicle.
